Favorite Half-Life 1 Mods

Recently I was playing some of my old mods for HL1, so post your favorites here.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

WANTED!: http://www.moddb.com/mods/wanted-the-western-mod-steam (For the download see the comments)

Night At The Office: www.nightattheoffice.co.uk

Poke646: http://www.poke646.com/

Poke646 Vendetta: http://www.poke646.com/

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Then describe the mods!

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wanted! Is a western-themed mod, similar to Fistful of Frags if you have played it, except it is Single-Player.
The weapons range from revolvers to lever action rifles, to bear traps, scorpions, miniguns, and cannons (Although there are more.) The end is a boss fight with your old brother, Ramone. And I wont describe it any more, or I will give the story-line away.

Night at the office is a mod that takes place in a 15 or so story building that does internation shipping. Your building gets invaded by terrorists that are led by someone I wont name, or it will give a major plot piece away. You start on the 10th floor, I believe, and work your way down. There are only 5 weapons in this game, all with custom models except the pistol, which uses the half-life HD pack pistol, the weapons are the Flashlight, Fireaxe, Pistol, AK47, and Shotgun. You will mainly be using the AK47 due to the fact that is what 95% of the terrorists carry.

Poke646/Poke646: Vendetta is a mod where you play as Damien Reeves, the mod takes place in D.C. and the capital is invaded with aliens, you are the countries only hope. The weapons are all custom modeled, and range from lead pipes, to Nail guns, to fully automatic nail guns, to shotguns, and to crossbows (although there are much more).

My top 3 would have to be:

Natural-Selection
Firearms
Wanted

I don't know what you're saying about Wanted, it's not single-player. I don't know how it is now, but back in the WON days I used to have Wanted and you could play multi player. There were very few servers, but it was still a fun game. Also if I remember correctly, the acceleration was crazy in that mod, the bunny hopping was like Q3 CPMA haha. I didn't like any of the capture the chicken maps though, they were terribly connected.

As for the other ones I listed:

NS: I'm sure everyone knows it. It's the most original and complex mod for HL1 that I've ever played, and I always found the idea really cool. I feel bad that I didn't find it sooner though because I just picked up on it in like 04. I never really liked it long enough for me to become really good at it though.

Firearms: A lot of people should know this one too. Counter-strike type shooter but without lives and a bit more realistic. The game is pretty cool the first few times you play it, but it gets boring fast - I gotta admit. Additionally, if there aren't a lot of players it becomes a hide-and-shoot war. Still a prety cool game though, I never really liked the realism (like adding bandages every time you get shot - because if you don't, you bleed to death or walking at the speed of a snail if you break your leg).

We might as well list the stand alone games that use the HL1 engine:

TFC: Probably my favorite game still to date. I've always loved the excessive action and the skills required in that game to be good. In addition - there are so many game styles and so many maps: it reminds me of the days at Axls a really long time ago, I never got bored of that. Besides the 'fun stuff' I also did some CAL and league in that and played it more professionally.

DOD: I always liked this game and wanted to become skilled enough to play league, but I never really got the hang of it - probably because I don't have the patience for it (I'm too antsy).

CS 1.6: Did some CAL and league, it's a game that I go on and off on. It's fun if you don't over play it.

WANTED is now single-player, there is multiplayer but no servers, and yes, the acceleration is crazy in that mod.

Haha, well, if we get people into it, I can set up a server. I did this once for a round of cs, but my comp sucks, so if I connect to it; I lag everyone.

Heres mine

Heart of Evil http://www.moddb.com/mods/heart-of-evil

Sweet Half Life http://www2d.biglobe.ne.jp/~ks_wca/shlhtm/shl_fm_e.htm

Just to name a few (I have more but I'll find links)

Heart of Evil: A combination of Resident Evil and Apocalypse Now. The game has a good story behind it and you have a partner to cover you. Alot of custom enemies. All weapons are custom and have their own look and sound. A meele like the machete can cut heads off people if you hit them in the neck. The game also has a good amount of resident evil 1 like puzzles. So my suggestion is if your not the best puzzle person I advise you to read the walkthroughs for help. Along with the main game is a challenge mode (Training Room). There is also a much improved source version.

Sweet Half Life: Yet another survivor story of black mesa. Except in this style of HL there are some new weapons, enemies, locals, HEV suit scientist (with weapons), and 1950s martian aliens? Yup theres something new there. There are also cutscenes and two endings for the game.

*EDIT*

They Hunger Ep 1,2,3 http://manke.planethalflife.gamespy.com/ (Not download link)

They Hunger: With They Hunger Co-op on Sven many people are getting their first taste of the They Hunger series. But the actual original game is much better and a blast to play. With custom weps, models, cutscenes, and voice work this is a must play for zombie fans. Besides why wait for ep 2 and 3 to come to sven when you can get the whole game.

Oh and Carl thanks for the link to Poke646's sequel I just finished it.
-I've covered wars you know? In my history class.....

Scientist Slaughterhouse: Pretty much a mod built around the idea of finding the most dynamic and hilarious ways to dispose of the scientists. Throughout the game, there are several types of machines, turrets, and monsters you can use to kill them off, or you can simply use the many custom weapons in the mod.

Peaces like us: A singleplayer mission that takes place in a laboratory on xen. The aliens have been tamed and fight alongside you. There are many memorable parts of this mod, like where you release a garg to take out a squad of HECU, or the section that is made up of interesting puzzles and unique map design, in which you fight holograms of the aliens. The only problem is that I could only find the version where the numers on your HUD are all chinese characters. :(

opbt: Operation Black Thunder ( a long single player series)
Code: Select all
Name : Roger McAllen
Age : 32
Rank : Corporal
Operational Area : Special commando for acts of sabotage in crisis areas

10.6.2031
After years of negotiation the 12 leading military powers agree to halve the size of their armies and to either demolish or convert bases that are no longer in use.
In spite of initial mistrust the project makes good progress and after a week numerous bunkers, launch ramps and other military bases are already prepared for conversion. Key positions are still under heavy military guard in case of incidents.

17.6.2031
However numerous US-bases are suddenly lost to the extensive attacks of an unknown organisation.
One of these bases is a launching ramp. Troops stationed in the vicinity attempt to retake it but fail.

18.6.2031
The WOLF-Organisation (Worldwide Organized Liberation Front) claims responsibility and threatens to attack nearby towns using the long range missiles they have in their power if the US-Army attempts further retaliation. The motives of this organization are unclear.

19.6.2031
A new attempt at retaliation fails and the WOLF-Organisation carries out its threat on neighbouring towns, an attack causing 327 deaths and many more wounded. The situation escalates..
A week later, after negotiations are broken down, the US government decides to make use of the NASF (National Antiterrorist Strike Force) in order to weaken the opponent from within by means of specially targeted acts of sabotage.

After five successful training years with the NASF, Roger McAllen begins his first mission behind enemy lines. He and his highly specialized team know are only given minimal information by before carrying out their task. Further details are supplied later by radio contact.
After a short briefing the troops are deployed using transport helicopters to a place about 20 km south of the launching ramp.
Their first objective is to find and destroy an artillery vehicle in the ruins of the city.
The second objective is to blow up a damn to distract from their infiltration of the launch base
Once there, they are to defuse the missiles, which constitute the basis of the WOLF-Organisation's threat.

Before you all start writing posts in our forum about how rudimentary the story is, let us tell you that we're presenting it like this on purpose, for a special reason which will become clear in the course of the game

(Some day i'll get round to converting the sc3.0 version to sc4.0 (43maps))

pov: Point Of View (single player, play from the other side as a Xen creature)
Code: Select all
Nihilanth's Proclamation, heard by all Xenizen, at the dawn of the Great Invasion:

"My children, my citizens, my followers, hear me. The time has come: the threshold has been crossed. Our home is befouled, our realm tainted, our sanctuary desecrated. A borderworld has come to demolish, destroy, and devour us all. The prophecies have come true; the Great Invasion is upon us.

Hear me and learn, my faithful. The denizens of this borderworld call themselves 'Humans.' They are murderous, genocidal, devilish creatures. They are unnatural: they have broken the natural order.
They change the world instead of changing themselves. They call this 'Technology,' and they wield it to terrible effect.

The prophecies told us this day would come. Their words were true, and so we must trust in their guidance: 'The secret of their success will be the instrument of their downfall.' I am gifting a legion of you with my power, enhancing your minds to research this 'Technology' and develop our own form to use against them.

Go forth, kinred of Nihilanth, residents of Xen, worshipers of my greatness, and unleash your wrath upon these foul creatures. Together, we shall turn their strength against them and push them back into their world. Then, the fate they reserved for us shall become their own. Hear me, and obey."

"The secret of their success will be the instrument of their downfall; the fate of all will rest on one."

Xonxt's Report (player) to Nihilanth, during the Great Invasion:

"My father, my leader, my master, you have spoken and so I shall obey. The Xen Techno Biologic Unit experimentation is progressing according to your wishes. Great headway is being made in the development of most of the various XTBUs. In particular, the evolution of my own project, the Xen Techno Biologic Sphere, is nearing completion.

The XTBS is capable of gravity-independent movement, and is surrounded by a thick carapace to protect it from damage. Its visual apparatus features a non-specific retinal pattern to bypass anthropometrical security systems. The facilities for speech are now fully implemented, but can only be used once you gift the XTBS with your mind.

For combat, I have duplicated what our enemies call a 'Gun' by crafting a three-pronged, nasute-like structure. A gland, which produces quick solidifying chitin, supplies the projectiles; bioelectrical energy generates power to rotate the biogun; and a pair of glands, whose secretions react explosively together, provide the propellant.

The XTBS only needs a little more time to fully evolve. The visual apparatus still needs to develop 90' z-axis rotation to align properly with 'Human' retinal devices, while the biogun has yet to achieve full socket rotation. Soon, however, it will be ready for mass production, the first of the weapons foretold by the prophecies."

"I swear on my life, you will have the XTBS at your disposal."

(Only 1 atempt has been made at converting this to sven coop, a single map sc_massive_final_r2)

tdef: Todesangst & t2def: Todesangst 2 (another mod version of what happened after HL1)
Code: Select all
In the original Todesangst edition (spoiler alert for those who haven't played it yet!), we learn about Dr. Jack Newell and his horrifyingly successful endeavors to merge Xen and human life.  Gordon Freeman nearly falls victim to an assassination attempt engineered by Dr. Newell, causing Gordon to reassume his adventurer role and track down Dr. Newell.   During the hunt, Gordon encounters Joe, a courageous member of the Black Mesa security force.  Together they hunt down Dr. Newell and eventually succeed in smashing his biological engineering plots.  The scheming doctor ironically meets his doom via his own diabolical creation, the "molecular transmutator".  Joe activates the control console to transform Dr. Newell into a vicious Xenantromorph.  Fade to black - roll the credits - end of story . . .or so we thought!

The story of Todesangst 2: der echte Feind (T2DEF)  further develops the internal Black Mesa conspiracy and the human/Xen biological engineering theme.  Dr. Newell was the genius mind behind the experimentation and development of the Xenanthromorph program, but unfortunately as in any complex secret collusion, the problem is much worse that it initially seems.  The true power behind the clandestine research is a multi-national anarchistic group called Schwarzgeist.  During the construction of the Black Mesa compound they began to secretly infiltrate the organization.  By the time of the first successful retrieval of biologic matter from Xen, Schwarzgeist personnel were in key scientific positions.  They managed to keep their identity secret until an inadvertent exposure during the resonance cascade disaster and ensuing containment revealed their existence.

Although top Black Mesa management and the NSA are now aware of their presence, their true objectives remain a mystery.  Intelligence gathering efforts have been hampered by Schwarzgeist's efficient and airtight organization.  In fact, Dr. Newell was not a known member of the group until his attempt on Gordon Freeman's life.  His human/Xen DNA decoding project and "molecular transmutator" equipment were skillfully disguised as pharmaceutical research.  As the story of T2DEF unfolds, Gordon will soon discover just how deep their influence and control of Black Mesa personnel has gone . . . .

(Although permision was gained to convert this to Sc no-one has ever done so)

I think all of them can be found in the single play mod section on steam downloads.

Rocket Crowbar.

The title only describes a small part of the changes made to Half Life.
Crowbar: Alternate fire shoots drunk rockets
Crossbows: Shoots out decals when aimed at wall
RPG: Shoots out scientists and barneys [!], which explode when a player is in close proximity
    Handhive: Freezes enemies
    Snarks: have laser eyes!
Tripmines: instant kill when someone walks past the laser

I use to play Rocket Crowbar v 1.9 on Half Life servers a lot. And it is still there. There are also other mods like Severian and OZDM.
I play under the name of Henry on Snark Servers.
